It was a beautiful spring day for a clean up! Straight from the Dixie Chemical community – Deborah Desmute, Integrated Management System Manager, and Kelli Gregory, Vice President of Procurement and Business Support, were among the many volunteers who took part in this clean up event. In fact, this is the largest, single-day waterway cleanup effort in the entire state of Texas.

From individual citizens to groups and local businesses like Dixie Chemical, Trash Bash attracts participants who care about cleaning up the community. In addition to the feeling of accomplishment in cleaning up a site, volunteers get a t-shirt, lunch, entertainment and door prizes.

A Healthy Houston

Trash Bash was founded in 1994 by the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The goal is to “promote a healthy Galveston Bay Watershed.” The event is managed by 501(c)3 organization the Texas Conservation Fund and now includes 16 sites cleaned up by more than 4,000 volunteers. While the event is partially funded through U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants, the event is really made possible by donations from individuals, organizations and local businesses.

Since Trash Bash’s inception in 1994, 109,421 volunteers have collected 2,274 tons of trash, 17.25 tons of recycling and 11,065 tires.

Thanks to Trash Bash, the Dixie Chemical community and Houston’s streets, bayous and parks are sparkling. The 2020 Trash Bash is already scheduled for March 28, 2020.

For Dixie Chemical, its about more than just chemical manufacturing. The company prides itself on being part of both the Houston community and a leader in the manufacturing and chemical industry. As such, Kelli Gregory recently received a STEP Ahead Award and Dixie is pleased to assist with local school science education.
