Dr. Gladysz Joins Dixie Chemical
In April 2015, Dr. Gladysz contracted with Dixie Chemical Company to collaborate as a Senior Technical Advisor for Syntactic and Structural Foams. Prior to this, he had 15+ years designing composite materials and products with additional experience in ceramic composites, polymers, foams, thin films and metals. He gained this broad composite materials and chemical engineering experience in a career spanning many sectors, including government R&D, academia and corporate R&D. While VP of R&D at Trelleborg, he oversaw the development of lightweight materials for deep-sea and aerospace applications. At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), he was Technical Lead for Rigid Composites and Thermoset Materials. He led the Dept. of Energy (DOE) efforts in both composite foams and fiber composite materials, as well as contributed as a safety review committee member when composite materials were used in handling nuclear materials. In 2005, he was awarded the LANL Distinguished Performance Group Award for his work leading materials development on the Reliable Replacement Warhead Feasibility Project. In the university setting, he was part of the Chemical Engineering faculty at Youngstown State University, where he taught core chemical and materials engineering courses.
Dr. Gladysz has organized five international conferences/symposia on syntactic foams and composite materials. He was on the organizing committee for inter-laboratory conferences (PolyMAC) and international “focused exchanges” for Department of Energy Labs. He has served on funding review boards for LANL, NSF, and the Lindbergh Foundation, and has been guest editor on four issues of leading material science journals. He recently authored a book published by Elsevier in October 2014 titled “Voids in materials: From unavoidable defects to designed cellular materials.” He is an owner/partner of Empyreus Solutions, LLC, a start-up company that develops composite materials and solutions for the hydrocarbon storage and transportation industry. In addition to helping develop and guide Empyreus’ initial business strategy, Dr. Gladysz consults and leads university and government technical interactions. In December 2014, he was appointed an Affiliate Member of the Materials Science & Engineering Conference Committee of Engineering Conference International (ECI). Dr. Gladysz currently lives near Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
