Dixie Chemical Partners with Local Boy Scout Troop

[Pasadena, Texas] – April 12, 2015
Dixie Chemical and Boy Scout Troop 468 partnered together on a project for a local Eagle Scout, as well as trained scouts in the troop for the Composite Materials Merit Badge. The Eagle Scout project consisted of a raised bed pollinator garden, which was designed and constructed by Troop 468 using composite materials made with one of Dixie’s epoxy curing agent products.

Support for Local Eagle Scout Project

The raised garden structure is located adjacent to a coastal prairie habitat that Dixie Chemical restored last year along with guidance from the Wildlife Habitat Council and Armand Bayou Nature Center. This prairie was certified in 2014 under the Wildlife at Work program.

The Eagle Scout project enhances the habitat by providing a feeding and resting place for pollinators like butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. It also enables Dixie to cultivate native grasses and wildflowers to later transplant in the prairie.

Earning a Composite Materials Merit Badge

Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Boy Scouts. It requires troop leadership experience, 21 merit badges and completion of a major project using leadership and organizational skills. Albert Resendez, a Dixie Lead Operator and Boy Scout Troop Leader, approached Dixie’s Senior Vice President Mike Gromacki about hosting the Eagle Scout project. In addition to hosting the projects, Dixie donated time, materials and employees for the Composite Materials Merit Badge. Dixie organized an employee team from several of its departments to support the troop.

“This project is truly connected to Dixie’s core values, our SOCMA ChemStewards® program, and Dixie sustainability goals for improved environmental footprint, youth development and community engagement. We were very pleased to host a project for these outstanding young men,” said Mike Gromacki.
